LA-ICP-MS analysis of sulfide trace elements in section OREX-800055-18

Author

Melissa Kontogiannis

Description

LA-ICP-MS analysis was performed on two sulfides, sulfides 1 and 15 in section OREX-800055-18. This analysis used a series of line scans to map the regions of interest. Sulfide 1 is a large, roughly triangular pyrrhotite proximal to a small, rounded pentlandite grain and a collection of magnetite framboids. Sulfide 15 was a group of lath-shaped sulfides near the center of what appears to be a Liesegang band, and neighbors a large carbonate grain. The purpose of this analysis was to identify and quantify the trace elements in the sulfide grains and surrounding matrix, and investigate trends within and/or relationships between trace element abundances to understand element partitioning.
